CTG adds emergency water facilities for Chinese sturgeons
Date: 2019-08-20
China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) added water supply facilities in early August to tap municipal water sources for replenishment at the Chinese sturgeon breeding workshop to ensure its smooth operations during the flooding seasons.
Dubbed the “living fossil”, the Chinese sturgeon is one of the oldest species in China. They are quite demanding for their living environment in terms of water quality, temperature and oxygen content.
CTG’s Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute currently breeds more than 2,000 Chinese sturgeons through artificial reproduction. To raise these rare fish, the conservation center at the institute taps water from the Yangtze River. However, as the total precipitation in this year’s flood season is higher than usual, combined with the uncertainty regarding the flow direction of the floating debris during the main flood season, the water drawing operation at the conservation center has been adversely affected.
Due to the increase of pressure on water supply, CTG proposed a plan to use municipal water sources for emergency water replenishment and immediate conducted field surveys and formulated construction design plan.
Based on the plan, a 200m water pipe was placed to tap nearby municipal water sources into the flotation sedimentation tank at the conservation center. Through the entire water supply process, the residual chlorine in the water is eliminated so as to meet the conditions of aquaculture water for breeding Chinese sturgeons, and ensure a safe summer for this rare fish.
