Baihetan Dam: the highest section hits halfway point

Date: 2019-03-19

Baihetan Hydropower Station, the world’s largest dam under construction, saw the height of its No. 15 and No. 19 dam sections reach 146m on March 6, signaling that it has hit the halfway point of the dam.

The maximum dam height of Baihetan Hydropower Station is 289m. Concrete pouring commenced on April 12, 2017. Currently, 22 dam sections, or No.7 to 28 dam sections, are in the process of concrete pouring with 3.45 million cubic meters of concrete in 725 silos poured already.

Temperature control and anti-cracking for mass concrete is posing a constant challenge to the quality control of the project. Due to its ultra-large scale, temperature control and anti-cracking at Baihetan Hydropower Station is more sophisticated than similar projects. Moreover, the typically dry and hot valley climate in the construction area is making the challenge even bigger.

To address these difficulties, the dam project team developed a set of temperature control measures and standardized processes based on the actual conditions of the project. At the same time, the team managed to achieve whole-process intelligent temperature control and fine-tuning by employing state-of--art approaches and development and application of intelligent water-passing systems.

“Thanks to the joint efforts, we have achieved high quality for all poured concrete work without the occurrence of any temperature-induced crack so far,” said an engineer from the dam project team.

2019 marks the highest peak year for the concrete pouring work of Baihetan Hydropower Station. The construction of the dam body will be at the height above the flood discharge deep holes in full scale, and a total of 2.62 million cubic meters of concrete in 621 silos is expected to be poured.
