Three Gorges Reservoir embraces the largest flood peak so far this year

Date: 2019-08-20

The Three Gorges Reservoir embraced the largest flood peak so far this year on August 8, recording an inflow rate of 45,000m3/second as heavy rainfalls starting from August 5 in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River caused water level to increase.

The Min River, Tuo River and Jiangling River areas suffered downpours starting from August 5, among which the rainfalls in the Min River and Tuo River areas were the strongest in a decade.

Throughout the flood control operation, the Three Gorges Reservoir has played a pivotal role in flood retention and peak clipping. At present, navigation at the Three Gorges Reservoir area and river sections is operating smoothly.

During the flood control operation, China Yangtze Power (CYPC), the listed arm of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), updated the water forecast in a timely manner and accurately predicted the peak and arrival time of the flood 72 hours in advance, ensuring sufficient buffer time for flood control operation.

Meanwhile, CYPC has vacated sufficient storage capacity to retain and impound the flood, and coordinated with Changjiang Water Resources Commission and the grid system to maximize the water resources while ensuring the safety of flood prevention and control operations.

CYPC will further strengthen forecast and joint operations regarding the rainfall and flood situation to ensure the safety of people living along the Yangtze River during the flood season.
