CTG-built Upper Atbara Dams Project in Sudan finishes provisional acceptance
Date: 2019-03-20
The Upper Atbara Dams Complex Project in Sudan, built by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), was transferred to the client on February 25, marking the provisional acceptance for the completion of the project and the beginning of a two-year warranty period.
The project, located between Gadarif and Kassalain eastern Sudan, the most fertile region of the country, has a total installed capacity of 320,000 kilowatts, consisting of four units with each featuring an 80,000-kilowatt axial-flow rotary turbine generator.
Impoundment of the project’s reservoir started in January 2015. Currently, the reservoir contains about 3.6 billion cubic meters of water, enough to irrigate a total area of 500,000 hectares, which can benefit 7 million people by providing water for irrigation.
In addition, the project will secure drinking water for 3 million people and provide electricity for millions. A third of Sudan’s population is expected to benefit directly from the project.
Following the Merowe Dam Project and the Roseires Dam Heightening Project, the Upper Atbara Dams Complex Project is the third major project in Sudan, led by China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE), a subsidiary of CTG.
Thanks to the pivotal impact the three projects have in Sudan’s social and economic development, Sudanese government has made the image of the three dams as the background of the newly issued 100-pound banknote in February 2019, endorsing the excellent brand and corporate image of CTG.
