CTG Brasil celebrates partnership with university

Date: 2019-05-24

With the aim of conserving species of fauna and flora in the region of Ilha Solteira, where the Ilha Solteira HPP of CTG Brasil is located, the company has cooperated with Sao Paulo State University (UNESP in Portuguese) to develop the project "the biodiversity of Ilha Solteira and its surroundings". The presentation of the study, including the first results, was made for the press and authorities on May 17th, at the DEFERS Amphitheater, Unesp de Ilha Solteira.

The project started in February 2019 and will run over a year. The research is concentrated in the fluvial island that gives name to the city, located downstream of Ilha Solteira HPP. The site was declared as Historic, Public, Cultural and Municipal Heritage in 2003, and Environmental Protection Area, in 2004.

"Our objective of this partnership is to generate knowledge with a focus on environmental conservation. These studies will help us to gather information about the ecosystem of the region that we did not have until then, "says Aljan Machado, director of Environment and Land Management of CTG Brasil.

In the project, besides representatives of the company, 9 teachers and 10 students from Unesp de Ilha Solteira are involved. The group will act in four lines of study: "Inventory of the flora of the fluvial island of Ilha Solteira"; "Knowing the birds of Ilha Solteira"; "Aquatic macrophytes and golden mussel: Residues with potential use as substrate in the production of seedlings and planting of savanna and ciliary forest species", and "Environmental geotechnics using techniques of soil bioengineering in the recovery of degraded areas".

In addition to producing knowledge, the partnership between CTG Brasil and UNESP includes the acquisition of 14 permanent materials for the university as microscope, greenhouse, lenses, and other laboratory equipment.

Sao Paulo State University (UNESP) is one of the six public universities of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. It is part of the state's higher education system and one of the few South American universities to be constantly listed as one of the best worldwide universities.
