Monitoring the spawning of Chinese Sturgeons in Cold Winter
Date: 2018-02-13
At the beginning of 2018, a cold snap swept across most of Southern China, holding Yichang in a snowy grip for days and sending temperatures plummeting. Despite the bitter coldness, researchers from the Department of Aquatic Ecological Conservation, Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute conducted ongoing 24/7 on-site monitoring of the spawning activity of Chinese sturgeons at a spawning ground downstream of the Gezhouba Dam.
It is understood that this ground is the only spawning ground for wild Chinese sturgeons that was identified subsequent to the construction of the dam at Gezhouba. The monitoring work starts every year in November where researchers from the Department of Aquatic Ecological Conservation analyze the population and reproduction progress of Chinese sturgeons through egg-predatory fish observation, sonar detection, underwater filming, egg monitoring and other means.
