Three Gorges Dam’s ship locks celebrates 16th anniversary of operations

The Three Gorges Dam’s five-step dual-track ship locks celebrated its 16th anniversary of operations on June 17. A total of 830,300 ships, 12.219 million passengers and 1.321 billion tons of cargos have passed through the ship lock, carrying in the past 16 years.
The ship locks saw its annual cargo turnover exceed 100 million tons for first time in 2011, reaching the designed capacity. The annual cargo volume handled by the ship locks stayed above the 100-million-ton level during 2014 and 2018, hitting a record high of 142 million tons in 2018.
The stunning achievements made by the Three Gorges ship locks are attributable to the dedication, diligence and wisdom of the builders at the Three Gorges Project.
In the past 16 years, the ship locks have been operated safely, smoothly and efficiently with operational efficiency improving constantly. With the ship locks entering the critical period for maintenance in recent years, inspection and maintenance work for equipment and facilities have been carried out as scheduled.
Starting from 2012, the ship locks have undergone five scheduled shutdowns and overhauls for inspection and maintenance for its key equipment to ensure an orderly operation.
