CTG attends UNESCO International Water Conference in Paris
Date: 2019-05-22
China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), the world’s largest hydropower developer, attended the first session of UNESCO International Water Conference, which started on May 13 in Paris. The two-day conference, sponsored by UNESCO and Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), is aimed to leverage the trans-sectoral management of water resources for sustainable water security and peace.
Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO stressed in her opening address that management and governance of water resources not only affects the health of both human and ecosystem, but also reflects local gender equality, education and cultural diversity. Water resource, she said, is critical to sustainable development and local poverty relief.
Liu Zhenya, Chairman of GEIDCO said in the opening ceremony that unsound energy development mode is a key cause of fresh water shortage and worsening water pollution. Building a global energy internet, transforming energy development patterns and accelerating clean and low carbon development will serve as a new way to tackle water resource challenges.
The water resource and sustainable energy development panel discussion was held on May 13 afternoon, allowing researchers and participants to demonstrate their research results and share their ideas.
Wang Shaofeng, CTG’s deputy chief economist said at the panel that CTG is world’s largest hydropower developer and operator and China’s largest clean energy group. In view of experience gained in the company’s sustained and rapid growth over years, he summed up some best practices of sustainable development in China’s hydropower sector.
He said planning, design and operation shall be carried out by taking into account the whole basin of the river. Design and planning of water resource shall be made to maximize the value of water resource to align it with the financial, social and ecological benefits.
“Specifically, modern theoretical design and computation shall be done in conjunction with physical model test, which should be cross-checked, validated and approved by experts and departments from various fields, and then input the results of comparative validation into design schemes for readjustment and implementation, thus forming a close loop,” Wang said.
In the same time, ecological value and green development should also be put on priority to ensure sustainable development of hydropower.
“We shall all properly settle the population affected by the hydropower development to boost local social and economic development and benefit local communities,” he said.
