Changlongshan pumped storage project delivers engineering feat

Changlongshan Pumped Storage Power Station, owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) successfully connected inclined shaft for catchment on November 28, laying a solid foundation for operation of the channel system and setting an industry-leading monthly drilling footage of 90m.

As a key structure of the water conveyance system, the inclined shaft for catchment is 415m in length with the excavation section measured at 5.0m × 5.9m.

Featuring steep angle, great depth, high-rock strength and complicated geological conditions, the project is considered as an engineering challenge in terms of scale and construction, posing elevated risks in quality and safety.

Penstocks installation work will begin soon after the completion of this section as the first unit of the pumped storage power plant is scheduled to be operational on June 30, 2021.
