Three Gorges Reservoir increases water replenishment to help fight epidemic

Date: 2020-02-10

  三峡水库持续加大补水力度,全力保障疫情防控用水用电需求

The Three Gorges Reservoir has completed a total of 6.176 billion m3 of water replenishment for the downstream regions this year by February 4, helping ensure the water and power supply as well as the safety of shipping operations in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, covering cities such as Wuhan as part of its efforts to fight the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak.

China Yangtze Power, the listed arm of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), has coordinated the Three Gorges and Gezhouba power stations since January 24 to increase output in a bid to ensure the average daily outflow of the Three Gorges Reservoir at about 7,000m3 and meet the peak demand for power and water supply in Hubei Province.

The Three Gorges and Gezhouba power stations increased power output by a total of 13.4 million kWh from January 24 to February 4, according to the operator. Meanwhile, the Three Gorges Reservoir has increased the water replenishment to the lower reaches by 2.509 billion m3 to 6.176 billion m3 as of February 4.

Thanks to the water replenishment operations, the average flow monitored in Yichang in December 2019 and January 2020 stood at 7,450 m3 and 8,240 m3 per second respectively, guaranteeing the security of water supply and power grid in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River during the dry season as well as the safety of shipping operations during the Spring Festival holidays.
