Baihetan dam completes plugging operation for its first diversion tunnel
Date: 2020-05-18
Baihetan Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project under construction, completed the plugging operation for its first diversion tunnel on May 10, removing a major risk for flood control this year, and laying a foundation to start generating power on schedule.
Baihetan Dam, built and owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), has a total of five diversion tunnels. The plugging operation completed this time is the 75m-long #5 tunnel with the construction carried out synchronously at the upstream and downstream sections. All the plugs are made of low-heat cement concrete, and the construction team has worked non-stop for dozens of days to complete the operation.
