Baihetan dam completes installation of underground turbine cases

Baihetan hydropower station, owned by China Three Gorges Corp (CTG), finished installation of turbine cases for its underground facilities on May 29, one step closer to project completion.

The snail shell-shaped turbine cases are made of 800 megapascals tensile strength steel and form the outer layer of the hydraulic turbines for water diversion. The cases, which installed on the left and right banks, ensure that the runner is always immersed in water during operation.

With the turbine cases installed, the project is about to enter the phase of power unit installation. Upon completion, which is slated for 2022, the Baihetan hydropower project will be the world’s second biggest power station after the Three Gorges Dam.
