The Three Gorges Dam ship lock marks 17th anniversary of operation

The Three Gorges Dam ship lock, operated by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), marked the 17th anniversary of operation on June 16.

Over the past 17 years, the ship lock system has always maintained safe, stable and efficient operation, repeatedly hitting record in cargo throughput.

The throughput reached 146 million tons in 2019, 8.1 times the maximum annual cargo loads shipped before the Three Gorges reservoir was impounded. The achievement has massively promoted the rapid development of the Yangtze River shipping industry and the economy along the river.

The Three Gorges ship lock has been strictly operated in line with scientific management and lean operation for the past 17 years. It has taken a number of initiatives to improve its efficiency such as four-stage operation for 156-meter water level, lowering the first lock chamber, reconstructing upstream and downstream docking facilities, and adopting new type of floating bollards.

It also conducts daily rapid maintenance, technical renovation and transformation, rotated operation and overhauling in order to ensure the reliability of its equipment and facilities, and keep enhancing its operational efficiency.
