China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co., Ltd, the alternative energy arm of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), has conducted its first drone test flight for offshore wind farm inspection in Xiangshui, Jiangsu province.

The program was conducted in partnership with the Shanghai Investigation, Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd, the design arm of CTG.

The aerial inspection of the offshore wind farm was conducted by a drone mounted with electro-optical pods. Powered by computer vision and LIDAR technology, the drone is capable of comprehensive automated inspection over the surface of blades, nacelles and other equipment. The drone provides a quick and accurate solution that can address the challenges of offshore wind turbine inspection.

The successful test flight sheds light on the research on a range of technologies which will improve the use of electro-optical pod drones for offshore wind farms inspections. These include; remote data transmission technology, remote precise positioning technology, BeiDou high-precision positioning and posture recognition technology, and fully-automated drone inspection technology.
