CWE Laos - Guardian on the Mekong River

Date: 2021-10-29

"Ready, one, two, three, go!" 50,000 lively small fish, including grass carp, silver carp and tilapia, were all released into the tailwater stream way of Nam Lik 1-2 hydropower station in Laos. River grass was swaying in the water, and the fish and shrimp were playing in the water. With the cheers of the crowd, the group of small fish swam to the distance, embarking on their growth journey.

China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE) has held such fish release activity for 10 consecutive years, releasing a total of 360,000 fish fry. Meanwhile, CWE has been strengthening its efforts on water quality monitoring and protection, contributing to the protection of water biodiversity in the basin and the ecological balance of river corridors.

"The fish release activities have increased the number of fish species in the basin, and efforts on water quality monitoring and protection have made the river clearer, " said Pu Sai, a Lao employee of CWE. "This approach not only enhances the aquatic biodiversity, but also makes my hometown more beautiful. "

In Laos, CWE has conducted a forest rescue program involving holding tree planting activities for years in power station camps, factories, reservoir areas and barren areas. Nam Lik 1-2 hydropower station and Nam Ngiep 2 hydropower station in Laos have been planting saplings all over their dam areas for years. These efforts have contributed to the green environment of this land, creating invaluable assets for local residents and protecting the lucid waters and lush mountains in the project area.
