Rare species bred inside spaceship in space for 183 days back to CTG
Date: 2022-11-16

A batch of Plantago fengdouensis seedlings that traveled with Shenzhou-13 crewed spaceship were planted at the CTG’s Yangtze River Rare Plant Research Institute, next to the Three Gorges Dam.
As a rare species of the Three Gorges Reservoir area, Plantago fengdouensis is an amphibious plant with a highly restricted distribution. Their seedlings were chosen to be bred in the deep space for 183 days to carry out further research and protection. Now, these emerald green seedlings are taken good care of by the researchers.
For the past decades, CTG has continued to explore new methods for the protection of biodiversity and ecological restoration of the reservoir area. So far, about 29,000 endemic and rare plants of 1,300 species were well protected here.
