Today, 100,000 captive-bred Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze River in Yichang, central China's Hubei Province by citizens and volunteers. This is the 66th Chinese sturgeons release activity held by CTG since 1984. Also, 100,000 more captive-bred Chinese sturgeons will be released in following 2 release activities.

Releasing artificially bred sturgeons is conducive to the reproduction and recovery of the species' wild population in the Yangtze River. CTG’s Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute has been committed to conservation and research of Chinese sturgeons and rare fish in the Yangtze River.

“I think this event is very important for the environment because the Chinese sturgeon is a creature of the age of dinosaurs and an endangered species,” said Aamir Hameed, a PhD student in hydraulic engineering at the China Three Gorges University.

Together with Aamir, lots of local volunteers and students have participated in this event. They had a close encounter with one of the oldest vertebrates on Earth, the Chinese sturgeon.

Let’s wish them a nice trip home!
