Sustainable hydropower
Date: 2023-03-14
Hydropower currently provides over 15% of the world's electricity. But more is needed. IHA’s annual World Hydropower Outlook sets out a roadmap to enable hydropower and other renewables to deliver against urgent net zero targets.
sustainable hydropower plays a vital role in the energy transition;its unique characteristics – flexible, renewable electricity generation that is deployable at scale – mean it can deliver reliable power, back up wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and ensure that we do not have to fall back on fossil fuels or yet-to-be-deployed technologies to keep the lights on.
The scale of deployment needed is big, yet attainable. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) both estimate that the most cost effective, achievable global net zero energy system will require around twice as much hydropower by 2050 as there is today - that is between 2,500 GW and 3,000 GW, including pumped storage hydropower (PSH).
