Date: 2024-05-27
A Cheirotonus jansoni, a long-armed beetle species under second-class national protection in China, was recently discovered in the Three Gorges Dam area for the first time during an insect diversity survey by CTG's Yangtze River Biodiversity Research Center.
This insect, from the Scarabaeidae family, feeds on decaying wood and serves as a decomposer with significant ecological value. It is listed as endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Sensitive to environmental changes, the Cheirotonus jansoni indicates a healthy ecosystem. Its discovery highlights the favorable ecological conditions of the Three Gorges Dam area.
Since 2020, the Yangtze River Biodiversity Research Center has identified 400 insect species across 13 orders and 115 families in the dam area.
