Ship lift at Three Gorges Dam accumulates over 40,500 safe operations

The ship lift at the Three Gorges Dam has completed a cumulative total of over 40,500 safe operations since its first trial in September 2016, transporting over 16.829 million tonnes of cargo and over 1.1 million passengers.

As the world's largest ship lift, it can accommodate 3,000-tonne vessels and ascend 113 meters.

The lift operates with 256 steel cables and a rack-and-pinion system, running approximately 22 times daily while maintaining synchronization with a height deviation of no more than 2 centimeters.

Thanks to its precision management of key vessels, the ship lift has reduced the average time it takes for a ship to navigate through the dam from 75 minutes to about 49 minutes, effectively enhancing efficiency.
