Over 920,000 fish fries released into Jinsha River

Date: 2024-07-01

On June 29, more than 920,000 fish fries from six rare and endemic species, including Rhinogobio ventralis and Gobiobotia, were released into the Jinsha River at the Wudongde Hydropower Project during an annual fish release event.

This release of Rhinogobio ventralis represents the most extensive release to date within China. Over the past decade, researchers have gradually overcome challenges that had once hindered the large-scale breeding of the species, thanks to their systematic efforts in conducting technical research and experiments.

It was also the inaugural release of Gobiobotia, made possible by insights gained from previous research on safeguarding unique fish species in the Jinsha River. The release not only contributes to the revival of its population but also sets a model for conserving small, rare and endemic fish in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

This release represented the 15th fish releasing event organized by CTG in the Baihetan and Wudongde reservoir areas of the Jinsha River since 2015, Up till now, a total of 4.42 million fish fries of rare species have been released into these reservoirs.
