Three Gorges reservoir successfully mitigates Yangtze River flood
Date: 2024-07-29
The Three Gorges reservoir has mitigated the first and second floods in the Yangtze River this year, employing a trio strategy: flood retention, peak shaving, and flood diversion.
These measures collectively held back 12.68 billion cubic meters of floodwater - equivalent to the volume of approximately 102 East Lakes in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.
While coping with the first flood in the Yangtze River, the Three Gorges reservoir retained 7.4 billion cubic meters of floodwater, lowering downstream water levels by 0.4 to 1.7 meters. This remarkable effort protected 428,000 acres of farmland, and avoided the evacuation of 2 million people.
In response to the second flood, the reservoir retained 5.28 billion cubic meters of floodwater, or 77 percent of the total retention by upstream reservoirs. This effort lowered downstream water levels by 0.7 to 3.1 meters, saved nearly 89,000 acres of farmland from being flooded, and avoided the evacuation of 210,000 people.
