Three Gorges Reservoir starts tentative 175-meter impoundment for 2024
Date: 2024-09-19
China's Three Gorges Reservoir launched this year's tentative impoundment on Sept 10 to store water at the target 175 meters above sea level.
The 175-meter water level marks the designed normal storage level for the Three Gorges Dam, which allows the facility to operate at its full capacity.
At this elevation, the reservoir holds 39.3 billion cubic meters of water. This allows for the maximum utilization of hydropower resources and transforms the Yangtze River into a more efficient "golden waterway" for navigation.
Each year, the reservoir stores water after the flood season and gradually releases it during the dry season, freeing up capacity before the next flood season.
This strategy of "storing during floods, releasing during droughts" provides essential support for navigation, water supply, ecology, and power generation throughout the winter and the following spring.
