Date: 2024-12-30
Beijing Review, China's only national weekly news magazine, recently evaluated the benefits and achievements of the Three Gorges project.
On December 14, the Three Gorges Dam in Yichang, Hubei Province, marked the 30th anniversary of the beginning of its construction, said the magazine, adding that the project’s first hydropower generator unit began generating electricity in July 2003.
Citing data from China's Ministry of Water Resources, the news outlet pointed out that the Three Gorges project, as the world’s largest hydropower project, has generated over 1.7 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to saving 550 million tonnes of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.49 billion tonnes.
In addition, the dam has delivered broad benefits such as preventing floods and improving Yangtze River navigation, contributing to economic and social development, the magazine noted.
