China's largest ultra-high-altitude pumped storage project in full swing
Date: 2025-02-17
Construction of the Nanshankou Pumped Storage Power Station in Golmud City, northwest China's Qinghai Province, is progressing rapidly.
It is currently the largest pumped storage project under construction in ultra-high-altitude regions (above 3,500 meters) in terms of both installed capacity and regulation reservoir volume.
Located in the Kunlun Mountains on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the project will have a total installed capacity of 2,400 megawatts (MW). It features eight reversible pumped storage units, each with a capacity of 300 MW, and is designed to generate an average of 4.824 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually.
Once completed, the power station will help balance power supply and demand in Qinghai's power grid, enhance the utilization of renewable energy, and provide essential power support for the development of a 10 GW-level clean energy base in Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province.
