Three Gorges ship locks have facilitated over 2.2 billion tonnes of cargo since inauguration

As of March 2025, the ship locks at the Three Gorges Dam had completed 212,000 lockage operations, facilitating the passage of approximately 1.07 million vessels, 12.28 million passengers, and over 2.2 billion tonnes of cargo since its inauguration in 2003.

The completion and impoundment of the Three Gorges project have improved navigation conditions along the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, allowing for year-round, round-the-clock navigation across the entire waterway.
