Three Gorges Reservoir boosts outflow to 12,000 m³/s, supporting Yangtze irrigation needs
Date: 2025-05-30
Recently, the Three Gorges Reservoir has been steadily ramping up its outflow to support the peak irrigation season for crops in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
By May 15, the average daily outflow had climbed from 8,390 cubic meters per second to around 12,000 cubic meters per second.
Since its first trial impoundment to 175 meters in 2008, the reservoir has cumulatively released more than 360 billion cubic meters of water downstream. It has become a lifeline for communities and industries along the river, meeting the needs of daily life, navigation, and ecosystem health.
As a "water bank," it stores water during wet seasons and releases it during the dry season, quietly sustaining the rhythm of life along the Yangtze.
