Major breakthrough: CTG successfully breeds third-generation Chinese sturgeon artificially
Date: 2025-11-28
Huge breakthrough for species conservation! CTG for the first time has successfully bred a third generation (F3) of Chinese sturgeon entirely through artificial propagation, marking a significant stage in the conservation and large-scale breeding of this rare species.
The parent fish involved — a 13-year-old female and 14-year-old male — were second filial generation sturgeon cultivated by the corporation's Yangtze River Biodiversity Research Center.
To ensure breeding quality, researchers carried out strict selection earlier this year, followed by months of nutritional enhancement and environmental simulation. Artificial induction and fertilization were performed on Nov 6 and 7, achieving a fertilization rate of over 95 percent. After five days of incubation, approximately 112,000 F3 fry hatched successfully. This achievement lays a strong foundation for restoring wild populations and safeguarding biodiversity in the Yangtze River.
