Powering the desert: Engineers build a mega energy base in Taklimakan Desert

Date: 2026-03-18

At the edge of the Taklimakan Desert, one of the world's largest shifting deserts, construction for the Ruoqiang New Energy Base in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is underway.

Here, engineers face sandstorms, pervasive dust and sharp day-night temperature swings, all of which affect equipment performance and construction quality.

With little precedent for projects of this scale in such an environment, teams are conducting parameter studies, equipment selection and technical planning from the ground up, advancing a large-scale wind-solar-storage base to deliver stable clean energy.
