A Gobi miracle powered by 260,000 mirrors

On the Gobi plains of Hami, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, 260,000 mirrors spread like a "silver ocean", turning sunlight into dispatchable clean power.

During the day, the mirrors concentrate sunlight to heat molten salt, converting solar energy into storable and adjustable thermal energy. At night, the stored heat is released to keep generating power, helping fill the gap when solar power is unavailable.

The Hami 1-million-kilowatt integrated concentrated solar-thermal power and photovoltaic energy demonstration project is turning the Gobi's geographic challenges into a strategic advantage for clean energy development. The project is expected to generate about 2.067 billion kWh of clean electricity annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by about 1.63 million tonnes.
