Academician Lu Youmei encourages primary school student in handwritten reply

What was the best gift you ever received on International Children's Day?

For a primary school student from Chengdu, Sichuan province, it was a handwritten reply from 92-year-old Lu Youmei, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Because his parents once worked on the Baihetan Hydropower Station, the student grew up hearing stories about major engineering projects. During a school letter-writing activity, he turned his admiration and curiosity into a letter to academician Lu. To his surprise, the letter received a warm reply from the 92-year-old academician.

In his own handwriting, academician Lu explained the Three Gorges Project in simple words and encouraged the child to study hard, discover his interests, keep learning and make a greater contribution to society.
