Three Gorges Ship Lock marks 23 years of safe operation, with cargo throughput topping 2.4 billion tonnes

Date: 2026-06-22

23 years. More than 2.4 billion tonnes of cargo.

Since its trial navigation launch in 2003, the Three Gorges Ship Lock has kept vessels moving safely and steadily along the Yangtze River. Behind the numbers is a major change in inland shipping: larger vessels, smoother navigation and more efficient cargo movement along China's "golden waterway".

As construction of the Three Gorges new waterway gets underway, the project will further ease shipping pressure, improve passage efficiency and unlock more potential along the world's busiest inland waterway.
