China's largest vanadium flow energy storage station enters commercial operation

Date: 2026-06-24

In Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the Jimsar 1-million-kW PV and vanadium flow energy storage integrated project has entered full commercial operation.

At the heart of the project is the vanadium redox flow battery system. Unlike batteries that store energy in solid cells, the system stores and releases energy by using chemical reactions of vanadium ions as they shift between different valence states. In simpler terms, it works like "putting electricity into liquid". With high safety, long cycle life and strong scalability, it is considered one of the most promising long-duration energy storage technologies today.

After entering commercial operation, the project is expected to generate about 1.72 billion kWh of electricity annually — equivalent to saving around 519,000 tonnes of standard coal and reducing CO₂ emissions by over 1.42 million tonnes each year.
