China's largest single-unit pumped storage power station enters full operation

A new "giant power bank" is now fully online in Taizhou, Zhejiang province.

On June 25, Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station entered full operation after its final unit completed a 15-day trial run.

With a total installed capacity of 1.7 million kW, the station features the world's highest rated water head for a pumped storage project at 724 meters. It is also China's largest pumped storage station by single-unit capacity, with four reversible pump-turbine units of 425,000 kW each.

As a flexible "regulator" for the new power system, the station will help with peak shaving, valley filling, frequency regulation, energy storage and emergency backup. It is expected to provide about 1.7 billion kWh of peak-load electricity each year, enough to meet the annual household electricity needs of about 1.6 million people.
